As one who was a fundamentalist, I know that a primary danger of fundamentalism is that it cuts us off from the Holy Spirit and from the great mercy and love of God because the fundamentalist has all confidence in himself and his beliefs and will not listen to anyone who contradicts him in any way. A true Christian is one is always questioning himself, taking his spiritual temperature, always placing his confidence in God but never himself. And like our Creator, a true follower of Jesus Christ, while always being a witness to the Gospel, will never force his will on another. I believe that the presence of numerous Protestant tele-evangelists in the US has cause fundamentalism to creep into Catholicism. and it is worrying. I am glad that Pope Francis tackled this issue, and did so in a way that was truly pastoral.
